Fathers Refuge is something I thought of as I was walking through the 14 months of our daughters battle with cancer back in 2000 and 2001. As a father I know how difficult it was for me to watch one of my children be diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 10. The doctors on Hilton Head Island did a cat scan and told us that if Jessica made it past 12 months we would be lucky. There are a lot of support systems available to mothers but I do not feel as if there are many support systems for the fathers. I want to find a way to reach out to the fathers out there that are hurting and need a safe place in which to communicate their thoughts and feelings as they walk through this type of experience. No one wants to go through this but if you are going through it I want you to know you are not alone.
